Why I Choose to Write

Written by Wang Shu Hui
I come from an Asian family, with my mother being the backbone of my life. Without her constant support, I would not be able to write this as I advance for my degree. However, originating from an Asian family means that actions count more than words. As a result, I have always struggled to find a voice within to project my feelings and thoughts to my dear ones. Hence, I gravitated towards writing and journaling my thoughts instead of verbalising them because I felt like it was the right thing to do.
Long ago, I had (and still have) the vision to be a writer or a journalist, crafting stories to touch the hearts of many people in this world, just as the writers have done for me. Jodi Picoult is one of the many writers who I look up to until this day. Her writing and finesse will forever be etched in my mind until the day I perish. I do not mind writing about anything under the sun, as long as I am able to touch the heart of someone that lives thousand of miles away from me. That, to me is the most gratifying feeling in the world. I am very fortunate to be able to read, understand, and analyse language and perceive emotions merely through the ink of a pen. I truly intend to do the same for people around the world. I believe that written pieces can bring people together in a world full of corruption and hate as well as nourish the minds and hearts of many people on this planet.
That is why I chose to enroll at IACT College for their degree programme; Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Media, Culture & Communication. I intend to pursue my passion in the world of media. I chose journalism as my major because in the world of mass communication, copywriting, photojournalism and mainly any form of written publications intrigue and pique my interest to contribute to the society. I believe that in the Digital Age, the circulation of information on the Net is rapid and this sort of advancement deserves to be acknowledged as a true form of art, as well as a multi-faceted way of communication. I am very interested to explore the vast world of media, film-making, culture, and controversies around the world. I have always been curious and intrigued by the secrets and controversies from every aspect of the media and world. I intend to break stereotypes and barriers surrounding women and prove myself independent and strong. I strongly believe that if my voice rings deep in this vast inter-web relation, it is something positive for me to hold onto. Thus, I am very determined to try my best to document many thoughts and ideas for the world through the practice of journalism. I strongly believe in the power of words and its potential to change the future. I believe that everyone deserves to know the truth and only the truth. That will be my adage until the day I die.
